In an earlier post I described my decision to skip sending out CVs and pursue independent work. That post passed 23,000 views. By September, however, the plan needed an update: I had not yet registered as self-employed for VAT purposes and had decided to do so in January.
On LinkedIn, launching immediately while enthusiasm is high can seem like the only option. In practice, I preferred to consider tax timing, the actual start of the business, and projects still in development together. In my case, waiting made more sense than sticking to an announcement at all costs.
Waiting does not mean standing still
This preparation period is mainly focused on three things.
-
Development: moving GigFlow and my other personal products forward, so I can start with solutions that are ready and tested.
-
Collaboration: taking the first steps in a new early-stage project with people I can exchange ideas with.
-
Relationships: building a network, because working independently should not mean working in isolation.
Returning to study to design better systems
Alongside this, I decided to enrol in the master’s degree in Computer Engineering, on the Intelligent Data Engineering and Algorithms track, at the University of Padua.
I enjoy designing business applications and complex architectures. I want to deepen the engineering and algorithmic foundations that help build reliable software as data, user numbers, and complexity grow.
Starting with a solid structure takes time. In software, it can avoid expensive rework; in my own path, it means preparing more carefully for the right moment to begin. The goal stays the same, even when the schedule changes.
The story that started this journey
